About VHealthLab

Pioneering Health Sciences Education with Virtual Labs

Let’s talk about your project

VHEalthLab is an innovative project designed to enhance Health Sciences education by leveraging open-access virtual laboratories (VLs). Focused on Biology, VHEalthLab provides students and educators with engaging, hands-on virtual lab experiences that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. By incorporating VLs, we aim to offer flexible learning opportunities that adapt to both remote and in-person teaching environments.

Our project is a collaborative effort between leading institutions, including the University of Nicosia, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Ascendia, and the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus. Together, we are reshaping Science education to meet the evolving needs of students and educators across Europe.

Let’s talk about your project

Why it Matters

VHEalthLab responds to the growing need for innovative learning solutions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. In light of the global shift towards blended and distance learning, this project provides a timely solution by making high-quality, interactive Biology labs accessible to a wider audience. By fostering essential skills like critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy, VHEalthLab equips students with the tools they need to thrive in today’s complex world.

Interactive Virtual Labs

Our open-access virtual laboratories (VLs) provide hands-on, immersive experiences in Biology. Whether learning remotely or in a classroom, students can explore real-world applications through dynamic experiments, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Multilingual and Accessible

Designed with accessibility in mind, VHEalthLab offers educational resources in four languages (English, Greek, Spanish, Romanian), making STEM learning inclusive and adaptable for diverse audiences across Europe and beyond.

Empowering Educators and Learners

We equip educators with innovative tools and pedagogical guidelines to seamlessly integrate virtual labs into their teaching. By fostering critical skills like problem-solving and creativity, we prepare students for success in the 21st century.

Project Objectives

  • 1
Identify Biology lab curricula in Health-related programs in HE across the EU
  • 2
Design and develop open-access VL Biology scenarios for HE
  • 3
Translate the VLs in all partner languages (English/Greek/Spanish/Romanian)
  • 4
Design and develop a VHealthLab e-learning environment and OERs’ (an interactive toolkit) to integrate VLs in HE curricula
  • 5
Design and develop pedagogical guidelines to support HE educators on how to implement VLs in their curricula in various forms (face to face or remotely) and provide open access training to educators in the partner countries
  • 6
Raise awareness on the need and value of integrating Open-Access VLs

Innovation

  • A pioneering e-learning platform for STEM topics with open-access virtual labs (VLs) on general Biology
  • Focus on VL practices in Higher Education (HE) with authentic learning activities and scenarios
  • Designed to support HE and secondary education staff teaching practices and foster student skills
  • Integrated social media features for modernizing Science education in HE in Europe
  • Aligned with EU policies and HE needs due to changes in education from the pandemic and current trends
  • Includes hands-on activities to empower academics to design and implement lab-based courses

Work Plan

The work plan is structured into seven inter-related Work Packages (WPs) to allow for the coherent implementation of the project according to the defined methodology.

The Consortium comprises the University of Nicosia (Coordinator), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Ministry of Education Sport and Youth of Republic of Cyprus, and Ascendia. The VHealthLab project, which kicked off in late 2023, has a duration of x years…
